SVG is a vector graphic format—based on XML and is used to display a variety of graphics on the Web and other environments. Under the hood, SVG documents are nothing more than simple plain text files that describe lines, curves, shapes, colors, and text.

SVG is an image file format created specifically for designing two-dimensional vector and vector-raster graphics for websites. SVG supports animation, transparency, gradients, and is easily scalable without losing quality. PNG is a raster image format used for full-color images (mostly photos) in good quality.

Cricut is a little simpler since everyone uses the same version of Design Space (for Cricut Explore One, Air, and Cricut Maker) In Cricut Design Space, you can use the following file types: SVGPNGJPG, DXF, GIF, and BMP.

Click File > Import > Import to Library. (Be careful not to pick File > Library > Import...that is a totally different function!) You'll get a pop up window. Navigate to the file on your computer that you'd like to save to your Silhouette Studio library.

One of the great features of Silhouette Studio Designer Edition is the ability to import SVG files. A SVG file, short for scalable vector graphic, can be resized large or small without losing quality. I love SVG files because they can be used with almost every cutting software.

You can use your own images created in other programs with the Silhouette. The Silhouette Studio® software program is able to use external images that are in a basic raster image format (such as PNG, JPG, BMP, GIF, and TIF file types). These files can be opened through the File > Open option.

In the send tab of the Silhouette Studio software, click on “Action,” and then under “Action by” select Fill. This will separate your design into different layers based on the fill color of each shape (see the image below). You can also separate by line color using the Action by Line option.

You can do this by holding down your shift key and then clicking on each element with your mouse. Then, right-click and choose group. So, in this example, if you're grouping the green elements, you would hold down shift and click on the letters YOUROWN, then right-click and choose group. Repeat with all the colors.

  1. Select the image and.
  2. Click the Ungroup button on the “Layers” panel.
